German Engineering Job Ads: What to Read Before You Apply
German engineering postings often front-load formal requirements and bury relocation-friendly signals later in the text. Start with the Vertragsart and Standort lines. A Befristung of twelve months may still be workable if your visa path allows it; an immediate Vor-Ort-Start in a city you cannot reach for four months usually is not.
Next, separate Muss from Kennnis. Many ads list five tools and three soft skills. Recruiters in Mittelstand firms often hire when you cover the core craft and show willingness to learn the rest on the job. International candidates sometimes over-filter themselves out of strong fits.
Language clauses deserve a careful read. 'Deutschkenntnisse erwünscht' is not the same as 'verhandlungssicher in Deutsch'. If the team language is English and German is desired for canteen chatter, say so plainly in your Anschreiben rather than pretending fluency you do not have.
Finally, note how the employer describes the team size and reporting line. A three-person development group in a Thüringen plant will interview differently from a large OEM campus near Stuttgart. Match your examples to that scale when you apply.
